It used to be that all you had to do was parade in your bikini and answer every question with your desire for world peace.

But now Miss USA pageant hopefuls are facing difficult questions on whether they believe evolution should be taught in schools and if they would ever pose for nude photographs.

And the beauty queens are said to be ‘scared to death’ by the tricky questions for fear of making a wrong step not just in their stilettos.

Bathing beauties: The Miss USA 2011 contestants at the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas

In video interviews before the June 19 finale, the attractive contestants are being probed on their thoughts on some of the country’s most polarising issues.

The girls are reportedly quaking, fearing a repeat of the controversy when Miss California Carrie Prejean said she opposed gay marriage.

Paula Shugart, president of the Miss Universe Organization, which also runs Miss USA, said these ‘topics are very relevant and in the news’.

But pageant expert Keith Lewis, who is executive state pageant director for California, New York and New Hampshire, said the questions have spread terror amongst the wannabes.

‘The girls are scared to death. They witnessed with Carrie Prejean how a firestorm can create a road kill, and nobody wants to be part of a situation like that again,’ he told Fox News.

‘The girls are concerned that there is a right or wrong answer. Polarising questions often create a situation where you suffer... if you agree, and if you do not.’

Former Miss USA publicist Angie Meyer said: ‘The pageant officials are intimidating contestants into answering questions a certain way that are deemed 'politically correct' while discriminating against their own belief and opinions.

‘The Miss USA Organization is choosing topics that are not only controversial, but intimidating,’ she told Fox News.

Controversy: Miss California Carrie Prejean said she lost out on the crown because of views on gay marriage

Miss California winner Carrie Prejean caused a storm of controversy two years ago when she said she opposed gay marriage.

‘I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman,’ she said. ‘No offence to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised,’ she said.

But she came second and later lost her Miss California sash after nude photos were published.

Contestants in this year’s competition are also said to be intimidated by the number of tickets for the final being given to pro-gay marriage organisation Human Rights Campaign, which is holding a conference in Las Vegas on the same weekend.

But Mackenzie Davis, executive of Miss Maine USA, said: ‘Miss USA is a spokesperson for the nation, and should not be intimidated by any organisation.’

The pageant finals are being held in Las Vegas on June 19.

Watch Miss USA 2011 Live Streaming Online: Rima Fakih

Rima Fakih (Arabic: ريما فقيه‎) (born September 22, 1985) is an American beauty pageant contestant, and winner of the 2010 Miss USA title, and is also training to be a professional wrestler in WWE as a WWE Diva. She represented the state of Michigan in the Miss USA 2010 pageant, having previously won the 2010 Miss Michigan USA competition. She competed on the 5th season of WWE Tough Enough but was eliminated from the show on the 4th episode.

Watch Miss USA 2011 Live Streaming Online. Fakih won the Miss Michigan USA pageant on September 19, 2009 at the McMorran Place Theater Port Huron. In May 2010 she represented Michigan at the Miss USA 2010 pageant held at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. She won the Miss USA title on May 16, 2010, becoming the first Miss Michigan USA to win the national title since Kenya Moore in 1993.

Fakih is widely believed to be the first Lebanese American, the first Arab American and the first Muslim to win the Miss USA title; however, pageant officials stated their records are not detailed enough to confirm these claims. The first Michigan delegate to win the Miss USA title, Carole Gist, became the first African-American Miss USA in 1990.

Less than 24 hours after she was crowned, internet entertainment media directed attention to a website featuring a 2007 "Stripper 101" pole dancing contest sponsored by Detroit radio station WKQI and won by Fakih. WKQI said they had been contacted by representatives of the Miss Universe Organization, requesting additional photographs and information about the contest. The station expressed their support for Fakih, adding "the photos taken from our website are no more provocative than those on the Miss USA website." On May 18, Miss USA pageant representatives told ABC News they would proceed with their media tour starring Fakih. She was also an actress in an independent short film with sexual undertones titled Throbbing Justice.

During and after the Miss USA pageant, Fakih's religious and ethnic identity became the subject of widespread discussion. On the subject of identity, she was quoted as saying "I'd like to say I'm American first, and I am an Arab-American, I am Lebanese-American, and I am Muslim-American."

Many Arab Americans celebrated Fakih's victory, but some Muslims felt she did not properly represent their religion. Muslim scholar Ghazal Omid wrote "To say that she is a Muslim is inaccurate. No Muslim woman can call herself a ... Muslim and be on stage with her bikini". Responding to the issue in interviews, Fakih said she and her family are Muslims and respect the religion, but they may not be as strict as many people and do not define themselves by their religion; they view themselves as more "spiritual" than "religious" and appreciate all religions. On the subject of the planned Islamic cultural center and mosque in New York, Fakih stated, "I totally agree with President Obama with the statement on the constitutional rights of freedom of religion. [But] it shouldn't be so close to the World Trade Center. We should be more concerned with the tragedy than religion."
